The Society of Inherited Metabolic Disorders was founded in 1978 largely through the
efforts of Dr. Donough O'Brien, in order:
- To develop a group of metabolic experts who could advise the government on the use of
medical products for the treatment of inborn errors of metabolism.
- To establish a connected group of centers for the diagnosis and treatment of patiens
with metabolic diseases.
- To foster research in this area.
- To assure the availability of expertise for diagnosis and treatment of patients with inherited metabolic disorders.
The SIMD is Incorporated through the State of Oregon and is registered as a Non-profit
Society under I.R.S. Number 93-0721765.
As a registered charity, the SIMD accepts donations from sponsors
sympathetic to its aims. Although the Society does not fund research,
it is available to offer advice to other organizations which do.
The SIMD does use its financial resources to spread interest and
study in inborn errors by selectively supporting membership and
attendance at conferences worldwide.
